B-Liga Tenth Round Summary - Pearl Coast Pirates Champions!
Pearl Coast Pirates formally claimed the Broome Soccer Association B-Liga title on Wednesday night, after Hagan’s Heroes faltered against
The Pirates had started the season strong, relying on game-changing performances by Gareth Jones and Phil Sheridan to propel them up the table, but after losing the two playmakers to interstate teams, struggled to perform late in the season.
Only a win against NDFC last week was enough to give the Pirates the points to force the issue at the top of the table.
This title win now makes the men in black Broome’s most successful B-Liga side, with two championships in three years.
Perennial runners-up Hagan’s Heroes had the impossible task of trying to beat
With talismanic Heroes midfielder Mike Doyle lost to injury, the Greens were always going to struggle, although captain Chris Stainton tried manfully to push his side into a higher gear.
In the other match of the round, cellar-dwellers NDFC and Racing Guantanamo AFC went head-to-head in a match that would see the loser claim the wooden spoon.
The score see-sawed throughout, with one side taking the lead and then the other in an exciting flowing game of football.
Just after half-time, young Jon Falconer managed to score what was possibly the greatest ever B-Liga goal, with a sizzling shot just under half-way that flew past goalkeeper Jon Gallichan and buried itself in the top-left corner.
That goal however was not to keep NDFC out of the game, when Nicky Anear capitalised on some soft Guantanamo defending to put his side in front again.
Controversy abounded late in the second half, when referee Richard Brunger waved play-on after a blatant NDFC handball, resulting in an NDFC goal.
Despite protests from several
Indeed, Brunger was keen to stamp his authority on the game, calling numerous soft fouls and even a penalty in what was turning into a niggly affair.
With NDFC ahead by one goal,
This was the fourth match in a row that Guantanamo had lost by one goal scored in the last five minutes, and condemned them to finish bottom of the table for the second time in three years.
Captain Andy Smyth will have his work cut-out to turn the Mighty Orange into title-challengers.
With the B-Liga now over for the 2009 season, the Broome Soccer Association will take a recess and kick off again next year in early February with the indoor Broomedesliga futsal competition.

B-Liga Ninth Round Summary - Pirates Champions?
Only a miracle scoreline next week will prevent Pearl Coast Pirates from picking up their second Broome Soccer Association B-Liga title in three years.

B-Liga Seventh Round Summary
The league leaders' unbeaten streak coming to an end, the perennial underdogs thrashing out a draw with their highly-fancied opposition and the association president copping a season-ending injury - where else could it be but the B-Liga?

Pearl Coast Pirates went into this match on a 5 game winning streak, while Hagan's Heroes had endured a patchy run of form through the opening rounds of the competition. With both teams looking to get the three points, it was the Heroes who started the stronger with Mike Doyle, Brett Claudius, Matt Carroll and Andy Graffen all firing their team ahead to stun the men in black. The Pirates had welcomed back their goal scoring machine Phil Sheridan, but the Northern Irishman was struggling to make an impact after a 2 week layoff. The Pirates managed to hit back just before halftime with Sheridan and young Emmanuel Navarette scoring, but were clearly shell-shocked at the Heroes domination. In the second half, the Pirates managed to get back another two goals, with Paul Roach and Ken Goatley playing well, before Mike Doyle popped up to get the win for the Heroes and end the Pirates winning streak.
Final Score: Hagan's Heroes 5 - 4 Pearl Coast Pirates

NDFC had struggled to make an impact on the B-Liga this season, after taking the championship last year. It had been well documented in the media how they had lost several key players, and recruited mainly youth players whom some said did not have the experience to take the team all the way again. Broome City had been touted to score an easy victory against these young stars, but any thoughts of cruising to the win were banished just ten minutes into the game when Jesse Anear converted a penalty to take the lead for NDFC. Anear added to City's woes with another before halftime to take NDFC two goals up. In the second half, City managed to hit back with one from Steve Shaw and two from Tiger to take City into the lead. Tragedy for the City defence however in the final minutes of the game, when Anear was scythed down in the box, allowing Tom Offer to convert the penalty and give NDFC the draw.
Final Score: Broome City 3 - 3 NDFC

Broome City and Pearl Coast Pirates will be a good match. You can quote me on that. I would have to say that looking at the form book, the Pirates should be a certainty, but it's hard to tell how good they will be after losing Phil Sheridan, who played his last game last week. Broome City will be chomping at the bit to avenge the draw they got with NDFC last round. I reckon though that the Pirates could just nip in here. Pirates to win narrowly.
Until next week.

B-Liga Fifth Round Summary

Racing Guantanamo had every right to feel aggrieved after watching a close match against Broome City last week balloon out of control. The Mighty Orange went into the match without marquee man Tony Delaney and the speedy Jack Reagan, two losses which tested Guantanamo's strength in depth. NDFC were able to field a full-strength team and were looking forward to testing themselves against a Guantanamo team which was historically their bogey side. The match began well for Guantanamo, with several surging runs on goal by Johnny Falconer and Luke Turner, but the NDFC defence coped well, with Selwyn Taylor and Tank U-Ten looking very solid at the back. As the match wore on, Guantanamo's fitness levels were called into question as huge gaps appeared in the midfield. Constant pressure from an in-form Tom Offer as well as Jesse Anear added to the weary woes of the Guantanamo defence as a second half capitulation saw NDFC score three more goals to put the match beyond doubt.

Praise for Armstrong from Retiring Coach
"While based in Bunbury in 1983, a 15-year old Alan Armstrong impressed me, he went on to represent the State and won many titles with Stirling Macedonia." - Frank Longstaff, former Canning City coach
1.10.2009
LONGSTAFF SIGNS OFF
One of the state's most knowledgeable and experienced coaches, Frank Longstaff, made a graceful exit from football by guiding Canning City for the final time last weekend. Longstaff coached at every level and enjoyed many successes during a remarkable 27-year career on the local stage, which has been brought to a close by work commitments. "The game on Saturday against Cockburn was my final one as coach of Canning," said Longstaff, who soon commences a fly in, fly out job in Karratha. "I've coached in West Australia since I arrived in 1982 and enjoyed every minute of it, the good times and the bad."
Ending his six-year tenure as coach of Canning was a tough decision for Longstaff, who has every faith in the club returning to the top flight. "Football is a passion for me so I will always be around the game when time permits," he said. "Leaving Canning is a big wrench, it has been a part of my life for six years but I'm certain the club will bounce back bigger and stronger for the experience. In Malcolm and Billy Watson they have two extremely passionate Canning men and the wheels are already in motion for the necessary changes to get the club back where they belong."
2009 didn't go anywhere near to plan for Longstaff. The season was only a couple of weeks old when the Canning coach was sent off for an on-field incident at Swan United which, after investigation by Football West, resulted it the respected coach being slapped with a two-year suspension. "I was devastated to receive the lengthy ban - which is still a mystery to me - but I had to take it on the chin," he said. "It had a massive impact on myself, the club and the players. I gave it my all, albeit under trying circumstances, but having no contact with the players on match days took away my strength of man management."
And although Canning bounced back to sit in the top five after eleven games, the teams' failure to win in the second half of the winter resulted in a dramatic slide into the relegation mire. "We started the season with a large squad but by halfway the season through injury and players returning to the UK left us threadbare. The players that remained gave there all for the cause but in the end just came up short," said Longstaff. "In hindsight, I would only sign overseas players who had come to Australia to play football, as when it came to the crunch we were extremely stretched for the last few weeks of the season."
Longstaff spent two years on the books of each Newcastle United and Burnley before "drifting around the non-League in my native North East mostly with limited success." He headed down under in the early 1980's and cut his coaching teeth through spells with Bunbury Dynamos, Bunbury City and Windsor Athletic. Two successful years at Ferndale United reaped the 1990 First Division championship, and preceded spells in charge of Kelmscott Roos, North Perth Croatia and the State Women's team. Longstaff captured another First Division title in 1997 with Southside United before an extended period as coach of the State junior teams and a year with Kwinana United. In 2004 he was appointed coach of Canning in 2004 and last year steered the club to the First Division championship.
There have been a myriad of highs in Longstaff's career, amongst them the trio of league titles and five years as a State junior team coach. "Winning the league with Ferndale, Southside and Canning are obvious highlights, as was taking the State Under-15 team to the semi-finals of the National titles in 2001," said Longstaff, who twelve months ago was recognised as the First Division Coach of the Year. "But what means most to me are the many, many people I can call true friends as a result of football. I'm extremely proud of staying in the game for the length of time I have and, hopefully, I've influenced a few football careers over the years."
A few players sprang instantly to mind when Longstaff was asked who are the players that have really stood out over the years. "While based in Bunbury in 1983, a 15-year old Alan Armstrong impressed me, he went on to represent the State and won many titles with Stirling Macedonia. Alan Hind was the strongest, toughest defender I have seen who could also play a bit," said Longstaff. "From my State days, Tony Naglieri and Jon Higgins are among the most skilful players I have worked with, both could play at A-League level, and Sean Kilkelly and Daryl Platten are both great players and very good leaders."
Longstaff then singled out three of this seasons' Canning squad for special praise. "Paul Oliver has everything, his fitness lets him down but there is no better or more skilful player in WA," said Longstaff, who pieced together his squad over a number of years. "Paul van Dongen proved his worth this season in the Premier League, he makes some fantastic runs from midfield and is still improving so I expect a lot from him over the next few years. And Devon Spence is as good a goalkeeping prospect as I have seen - either here or in the UK."
B-Liga Fouth Round Summary

Racing Guantanamo had been riding a wave of euphoria after their third round destruction of Hagan's Heroes two weeks ago. They faced a stiff test of their new-found match winning ability in Broome City. City, who have had their fair share of critics in the media for their discipline issues, took the field without captain Tim Mildenhall who was away on international duties. Both teams started off well - with opportunities at both ends, but it was City who took the lead through an uncharacteristic mistake by Guantanamo captain Andy Smyth, who passed the ball to Jamie Lane who thundered the ball past Orange goalkeeper Andy Chapman. The score stayed at that for rest of the first half and much of the second, as the Mighty Orange tried to find a way through the stubborn Broome City defence. However, a second goal for the Blues was followed by 4 more in quick succession as Guantanamo finished the match with a whimper and City locked themselves into second spot on the ladder.

B-Liga Third Round Summary
Billed as the "poor cousin" of the matches of this round, Racing Guantanamo vs. Hagan's Heroes turned into a classic win for the orange underdogs who totally outclassed and outwitted their much more illustrious opponents. B-Liga history buffs will know that prior to this, Guantanamo had never managed to take even so much as a point off the Heroes. A flamboyant attack of key passes and excellent runs, built on strong defensive and midfield foundations were the keys to Guantanamo's success, but it must also call into question the tactics of the Heroes' coaching staff who again persisted with one lone striker. This time however, it was Mike Doyle who was battling alone up front, and it wasn't until late in the game when he was supported by Brett Claudius and Karen Salkilld that he looked even remotely threatening. Guantanamo however, didn't let up, and it was of great joy to the Orange fans that Martin Kessler stood up to have his best performance of the season so far - stamping his authority on the game. Irishman Joe Tighe also worked hard in defence to keep Hagan's Heroes to just one goal, while young gun Luke Turner netted a hat-trick to put the score beyond doubt.
The match of the round saw title challengers Broome City and Pearl Coast Pirates collide in a match that was expected to have its share of fireworks. It didn't disappoint either, with plenty of crunching tackles and exuberant goal celebrations delighting the spectators on the sidelines. Phil Sheridan was again the star performer on the night, but the talking point has to be the return of Ken Goatley to the B-Liga. The former Racing Guantanamo man has come in at the request of Pirates' captain Richard Brunger, upsetting many Mighty Orange fans. Goatley took on a defensive role alongside South African Ronny Venter, and the two formed a solid partnership to keep City down to just two goals. Steve Shaw again impressed for the Blues, but the big news for City is the loss of legend Bill Shaw, who was stretchered off during the match. No reports as yet as to the type of injury, but Shaw did spend time in hospital, and the news out of the City camp is that he will be out for the season.
See you in two weeks time.

B-Liga Second Round Summary
The match of the round was undoubtably 2007 champions Pearl Coast Pirates, against a Hagan's Heroes outfit who have picked up the runners up medal two years in a row. With both teams firing on all cylinders so far, there was much speculation that the winner of this one could go all the way and pick up the league title. The Pirates went into the match as slight favourites, and showed their class throughout the first part of the game, passing the ball around well and using some clever touches and flick-ons to torment the Heroes' defence. The normally composed Heroes began to look frustrated, as their baffling tactic of only playing with one man up front backfired, with Andy Graffen usually battling away alone against three Pearl Coast players. Gareth Jones looked particularly good for the Pirates, scoring a hat-trick of excellent goals to further his team's cause, while Matt Carroll looked dangerous for the Heroes going forward.

Women’s soccer to get kick started with representative game
Competitive soccer returns to Broome on September 4 when the Broome Soccer Association’s women’s team look to defend its title against Newman. The Broome women have been training hard in preparation for the inter-town game, the first to be played under lights at Father McMahon Sports Field.
The side played an inaugural representative game against Newman last year. Broome won that game 7-2 despite never having played together before or having their own league to practice in. One year on and the women’s game is beginning to gain momentum with the establishment of a stand alone women’s futsal (indoor soccer) competition and specialised training sessions for the Broome squad.
The team have been training hard at Male Oval and BSA secretary Monique Kelly said the team were really looking forward to another game against Newman. “Last year I think we surprised Newman with the way we played. There are a lot of good players up here and this year we again have a good mix of experience and youth, but we are expecting a tougher game against them this time, now they know what to expect from us.”
The popularity has ensured the game will now go outdoors with several women keen to coordinate a social kick at Father McMahon field on Wednesdays to coincide with the BSA’s senior competition, the B Liga.
Ms Kelly said growing the women’s game in Broome was an important part of developing the sport in the region. “We’re keen to create more opportunities for women to participate. Soccer is probably the fastest growing female sport and with the Perth Glory women’s team now up and running and Indigenous pathways for the younger girls. It’s the perfect time to give women in Broome the opportunity to try the sport, have fun and get fit.”
She said it was pleasing to see so many young girls participating in the junior small sided games program. “Hopefully some of these girls will come down and watch us play and we can give them something to aim for in years to come.”
Broome’s development has echoed all the way to
