2009 a season to remember

Just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for making 2009 such a cracker. It has been fun. Pure and Simple.

In three years we have taken the game from 20 or so people having a casual kick to approx 200 members. It wouldn't be possible without your contribution. So cheers.

2009 saw us develop the women's game, confirm the popularity of the juniors and the potential to expand into youth football. We had five outdoor teams, ten futsal teams, a four team women's futsal competition, women's representative team, and most importantly 130 juniors participating in small sided games. For the first time the international st patricks day extravaganza involved - god forbid - a footy team. There was even a beach football game with Jimeoin.

Yep 2009 was supposed to be a year of consolidation and we still ended up with three nominations in the broome sports awards!

We didn't host Derby, or an indoor world cup, as we have done in the past. We simply didn't have the capacity to run them. They could be resurrected in 2010. With the world cup set to play out again it is already looking like a big year. How big will depend on who is willing to jump on our bandwagon and lend a hand.

In 2010 Football Australia will bring their cottees five a side program to the schools as part of our promotion. More links with the school will provide greater opportunity to promote our sport.
With many children moving into the youth age groups there is great potential to expand our junior programs. This expansion could also be developed into communities such as Bidyadanga and Lombadina. Both communities showed an interest in working with us already this year. Again we didn't have the capacity to run with it. Football Australia's Indigenous football festival is the perfect incentive to encourage communities to get involved. Having a girl and boy representative in the WA team would be a great thing for this region.

The girls in particular could benefit from the expansion of our women's competition. Already the amount of enthusiasm for developing a stand alone competition will ensure a women's coordinator will be included on the committee next year. The fact our game can be played by both sexes is a huge strength and the potential to give the game to the regions girls and women is enormous. There are very few team sports for women in this region and with a Perth Glory women's team newly established our local girls can have something to dream of. Why not?

There has also been interest from the Big Issue's homeless soccer program. They are keen to work with our association to provide opportunities for marginalised groups. There is a program in Port Hedland about to start and indeed greater links with our southern neighbour has already been talked about this year. In 2010 if Port Hedland were included in our representative games we would be on our way to a north west championships.

Yep 2010 is shaping up to be a big year. Our fourth since we resurrected the association. In these short few years i have personally been amazed at what can be achieved when good people work together for a common cause. Along the way there has been some great friendships established, plenty of memorable social events, and a couple of kids from cable beach primary school with my autograph on their school bag! By providing opportunities for our children to participate we inadvertently become role models. Personally i have found great satisfaction in this. It inspires me to want to develop our association so that it continues to bring all ages and walks of life together in the name of football.

We are all part of this association together. Together we can take our game wherever we want. It's just a matter of us all making a contribution where we can. So have a think about what you might be able to do to keep us moving forward. What can you do to ensure we continue to enjoy ourselves?

Watching 2009 unfold in such a fantastic way has been unbelievably rewarding. We've had some fun. I look forward to 2010 and working to ensure those experiences can be enhanced and new friendships developed. This is after all what it is all about.

Thanks again for 2009. Happy holidays and see you indoors in February.

Womens Outdoor 2009

This was supposed to be in the last post - but my computer is nasty, its never the user

Competition "Tough" for the Womens last game

The women's outdoor season finished with some fierce competition last Wednesday. Unfortunately just like the controversy surrounding the BLiga, the ref for the game needs to be questioned. Misplacing of the game card, blaming it on holiday brain, means that for 2010 some things need to change. What the ref can remember is that the game was so intense that neither team had managed to score until just before half time, showing just how impressive the level the women have reached this season in the game. All the women who have played in the outdoor season are absolute champions, and thanks for being part of it, washing team shirts etc and for the all the fun and laughs! I look forward to celebrating 2009 at the windup this Saturday night, a few social kicks on the beach, and the indoor season starting up in Feb 2010.

B-Liga Tenth Round Summary - Pearl Coast Pirates Champions!

Pearl Coast Pirates formally claimed the Broome Soccer Association B-Liga title on Wednesday night, after Hagan’s Heroes faltered against Broome City.

The Pirates had started the season strong, relying on game-changing performances by Gareth Jones and Phil Sheridan to propel them up the table, but after losing the two playmakers to interstate teams, struggled to perform late in the season.

Only a win against NDFC last week was enough to give the Pirates the points to force the issue at the top of the table.

This title win now makes the men in black Broome’s most successful B-Liga side, with two championships in three years.

Perennial runners-up Hagan’s Heroes had the impossible task of trying to beat Broome City by a margin of at least 21 goals to try and depose the Pirates at the top, but stuttered against the Blues who won the match 7-4.

With talismanic Heroes midfielder Mike Doyle lost to injury, the Greens were always going to struggle, although captain Chris Stainton tried manfully to push his side into a higher gear.

In the other match of the round, cellar-dwellers NDFC and Racing Guantanamo AFC went head-to-head in a match that would see the loser claim the wooden spoon.

The score see-sawed throughout, with one side taking the lead and then the other in an exciting flowing game of football.

Just after half-time, young Jon Falconer managed to score what was possibly the greatest ever B-Liga goal, with a sizzling shot just under half-way that flew past goalkeeper Jon Gallichan and buried itself in the top-left corner.

That goal however was not to keep NDFC out of the game, when Nicky Anear capitalised on some soft Guantanamo defending to put his side in front again.

Controversy abounded late in the second half, when referee Richard Brunger waved play-on after a blatant NDFC handball, resulting in an NDFC goal.

Despite protests from several Guantanamo players, including supporters on the sidelines, Brunger refused to change his call, marking one of the most shocking decisions since the Thierry Henry handball that put Ireland out of the World Cup.

Indeed, Brunger was keen to stamp his authority on the game, calling numerous soft fouls and even a penalty in what was turning into a niggly affair.

With NDFC ahead by one goal, Guantanamo again pushed forward in numbers, but were unable to break their stubborn defence, resulting in the match ending 5-4.

This was the fourth match in a row that Guantanamo had lost by one goal scored in the last five minutes, and condemned them to finish bottom of the table for the second time in three years.

Captain Andy Smyth will have his work cut-out to turn the Mighty Orange into title-challengers.

With the B-Liga now over for the 2009 season, the Broome Soccer Association will take a recess and kick off again next year in early February with the indoor Broomedesliga futsal competition.

B-Liga Ninth Round Summary - Pirates Champions?

Only a miracle scoreline next week will prevent Pearl Coast Pirates from picking up their second Broome Soccer Association B-Liga title in three years.

The men in black have capitalised on a superb early run to survive a late drop in form to go three points clear of rivals Hagan’s Heroes.

A Pirates goal difference of +20 means that Hagan’s will need to see off Broome City next week by a margin of 21 goals.

The men in black managed to see off NDFC 3-0 last week with Ken Goatley netting a hattrick to put the Pirates in their unassailable lead at the top of the table.

In the other match of the round, a stubborn Racing Guantanamo came up against Broome City, who were in a jubilant mood after seeing off Pearl Coast Pirates the week before.

Guantanamo were on a run of four defeats in a row, and were eager to break their duck against the Blues.

Irishman Joe Tighe was again the steadying hand at the heart of the Guantanamo defence as the Mighty Orange soaked up the pressure and hit City on the break.

Some deft touches by Chris Hingston and Ben Jones served their side well, but the killer blow was missing at the end.

As City struggled to get anything out of the game, Guantanamo came forward in greater numbers as they were desperate to get something out of the game.

Disaster struck with five minutes to go, as a momentary lapse in defence saw Broome City’s Jamie Lane thunder a shot past Orange goalkeeper Andy Chapman to get his side in front.

Guantanamo again pushed to get numbers forward, but were thwarted by a City team who got everyone behind the ball in the final few moments, resulting in the Mighty Orange going down to their fifth loss in a row.

Next week sees Hagan’s Heroes attempt to do the impossible against City, while Guantanamo travel to face NDFC, the loser of which will finish bottom of the table.

B-Liga Presentation Night Invite

B-Liga Eighth Round Summary

By Mike Doyle

The most thrilling B Liga championship in Broome Soccer Association history is set to go down to the final week of the season with Pearl Coast Pirates and Hagan’s Heroes locked on 15 points with just one game left for both sides.

Pearl Coast Pirates lost for the second time in a row, this time 2-0 at the hands of Broome City, whilst the Heroes season is still alive with a thrilling 3-2 win against Racing Guantanamo.

Only a few weeks ago Pirates were undefeated and appeared seemingly invincible, but the loss of key players has severely hampered their season. Take nothing away from Broome City. The navy blues put in their best performance of the season with Colm O’Brien and the ever reliable Sasha Jovanoski ensuring the Pirates woes continued. Pearl Coast’s goal difference may yet hand them the title, but they must claim maximum points in round nine against the ever improving NDFC.

In contrast Heroes winning streak stretched to four, thanks to a last-gasp thunderbolt from marquee defender Mick Albert. Goals from Graffen and Carroll had given the double H’s an early lead, but Guantanamo are not the push overs of old. Goals either side of the break brought the Oranges level. The match hung in the balance for most of the half with both teams having chances to win, but Albert would not be denied firing home the most important goal in Hero history to keep the dream alive. With the bye in round nine the green machine know if Pirates falter a win against Broome City in the final round could see Heroes finally cast off the tag as perennial second place getters.

Hagan’s Heroes 3 - 2 Racing Guantanamo AFC

Broome City 2 - 0 Pearl Coast Pirates

B-Liga Seventh Round Summary

The league leaders' unbeaten streak coming to an end, the perennial underdogs thrashing out a draw with their highly-fancied opposition and the association president copping a season-ending injury - where else could it be but the B-Liga?

Pearl Coast Pirates went into this match on a 5 game winning streak, while Hagan's Heroes had endured a patchy run of form through the opening rounds of the competition. With both teams looking to get the three points, it was the Heroes who started the stronger with Mike Doyle, Brett Claudius, Matt Carroll and Andy Graffen all firing their team ahead to stun the men in black. The Pirates had welcomed back their goal scoring machine Phil Sheridan, but the Northern Irishman was struggling to make an impact after a 2 week layoff. The Pirates managed to hit back just before halftime with Sheridan and young Emmanuel Navarette scoring, but were clearly shell-shocked at the Heroes domination. In the second half, the Pirates managed to get back another two goals, with Paul Roach and Ken Goatley playing well, before Mike Doyle popped up to get the win for the Heroes and end the Pirates winning streak.

Final Score: Hagan's Heroes 5 - 4 Pearl Coast Pirates

NDFC had struggled to make an impact on the B-Liga this season, after taking the championship last year. It had been well documented in the media how they had lost several key players, and recruited mainly youth players whom some said did not have the experience to take the team all the way again. Broome City had been touted to score an easy victory against these young stars, but any thoughts of cruising to the win were banished just ten minutes into the game when Jesse Anear converted a penalty to take the lead for NDFC. Anear added to City's woes with another before halftime to take NDFC two goals up. In the second half, City managed to hit back with one from Steve Shaw and two from Tiger to take City into the lead. Tragedy for the City defence however in the final minutes of the game, when Anear was scythed down in the box, allowing Tom Offer to convert the penalty and give NDFC the draw.

Final Score: Broome City 3 - 3 NDFC

Broome City vs. Pearl Coast Pirates

Odds: Broome City win $3.00, Draw $2.00, Pearl Coast Pirates win $1.90

Well the B-Liga is getting harder to tip than the A-League at the moment, with both favourites slipping up last week. I would have to say that Hagan's Heroes will struggle this week with the loss of Mike Doyle, who suffered a neck injury in the last round and will be out for the season. Guantanamo on the other hand have experienced a surge in team cohesion during their last match and will look to get a win over the team they beat back in Round 3. I want to say Guantanamo will win - but I think the Heroes will pip them to the post. Hagan's Heroes to win marginally.

Broome City and Pearl Coast Pirates will be a good match. You can quote me on that. I would have to say that looking at the form book, the Pirates should be a certainty, but it's hard to tell how good they will be after losing Phil Sheridan, who played his last game last week. Broome City will be chomping at the bit to avenge the draw they got with NDFC last round. I reckon though that the Pirates could just nip in here. Pirates to win narrowly.

Until next week.

B-Liga Sixth Round Summary - 'Black Wednesday'

Round six of the B-Liga will be remembered for two things - a classic match that will be forever etched into the minds of fans, and a scandal that threatens to destroy the reputation of a team and it's president. The scandal - now known in the media as 'Black Wednesday' has been extensively covered, so this summary will only focus on the footballing action on the field.

In the first match of the round, Hagan's Heroes took on NDFC that billed last year's champions against last year's runners-up. Both teams were coming off good wins, and both were looking to get a foothold on the upper reaches of the table. Hagan's Heroes went into the match without new signing Mick Albert, while NDFC were without the influential Alan Armstrong. The match took on an entertaining vibe, as both teams tried to play attacking football. The Heroes however, were struggling with injuries as both Mike Dawson and Eddie Dwyer played on with niggling knee injuries, and Peter Fasey played his first game after sustaining a back injury several weeks ago. Good play from both teams, including good peformances from Troy Hunter and Selwyn Taylor saw NDFC continue to threaten, but it was Hagan's Heroes who came out on top.

Final Score: NDFC 1 - 6 Hagan's Heroes

Pre-match odds showed that Pearl Coast were huge favourites to complete another mauling of Racing Guantanamo, with the first meeting between these two ending in an 11-4 drubbing. However, it was a grim and determined Guantanamo side who took the field in this one, still minus Tony Delaney. The Mighty Orange were able to welcome back Jack Reagan, and it was his pluckiness in the midfield that was to cause such headaches for the Pirates. Pearl Coast welcomed back captain Richard Brunger, but were missing key man Phil Sheridan, while Ken Goatley just passed a late fitness test to take to the field. In a match where chances opened up for both sides, this match saw some excellent performances from Guantanamo players Chris Hingston and Martin Kessler, who both created chances from deep, while the Pirates' Matt Sheridan and Emmanuel Navarette looked dangerous. The performance of the night however was given by Guantanamo goalkeeper Andy Chapman, whose display of acrobatics between the sticks saved Guantanamo on several occasions. The match ended in a win for the Pirates, but could so easily have finished the other way as Guantanamo failed to capitalise on a large spell of dominance in the second half. Historical Note: This match takes the record for being the lowest scoring match in B-Liga history.

Final Score: Pearl Coast Pirates 2 - 1 Racing Guantanamo AFC

Pearl Coast Pirates vs. Hagan's Heroes
Odds: Pearl Coast Pirates win $2.00, Draw $2.10, Hagan's Heroes win $2.80

NDFC have put together a great run of form recently, but a loss at the hands of Hagan's Heroes will surely hurt this young team, as does the injury to influential midfield man Alan Armstrong. I'm not sure if the youth of NDFC can match the experience of Broome City, who have drawn on the form of Sasho Jovanovski to propel them forward. Look for lots of goals in this one, but I have to say Broome City will get the win.

With Hagan's Heroes involved in the Black Wednesday scandal that has rocked the B-Liga, I would expect the men in green to exhibit a lack of focus due to the unknown legal fate of President Mike Doyle. Captain Chris Stainton has a big job on his hands to get the squad focussed for this crucial match, and his task won't be helped by the fact that his squad has taken a huge amount of injuries and will struggle to nurse them. The Pirates however, will welcome back arguably the best player in the league, with Phil Sheridan set to return. It is no secret the Pirates have struggled without him, and his comeback will be a welcome boost for the Coast. Pirates to win.

Until next week.

BLiga W-League 28 Oct

Well it was definitely the match of the evening at Father Mac field when the Racing G Girls took on the Broome City Chicks. The first half was full of determination and gutso by both sides indicating that the competition has stepped up a notch, with the game tied 2 a piece early in the first half. However an inform Danielle managed to score herself a couple just before the half time break to give Racing G's a 2 goal lead. Broome City Chicks came out blazing in the second half, with new recruit Mae running forward onto goal, however it was Nancy that netted the goal of the evening from an skillfully executed pass from Kaz to give the Chicks hope of closing the gap. Alissa from Racing G showed that her off season moose wrestling training has paid off with numerous runs down the wing to assist Danielle in achieving a beautiful hat trick. The strong defence from Claire and Lexie from the RG team kept the BC at bay with the end scores being RG 5 to BC 3. The game was not without controversy with a certain BC player nearly yellow carded for offensive language, and injury time awarded so the ref could have a rest.
Stay posted for next weeks write up from the action packed BLiga W-League!

Hagan's Accused of 'Tapping Up' Guantanamo Legend

The B-Liga has erupted in scandal, with Hagan's Heroes accused of tapping up a rival player.

Racing Guantanamo have penned a strongly worded letter to the Broome Soccer Association regarding a phone call allegedly made to Guantanamo legend Francois 'The Rock' Kruger by Heroes President Mike Doyle, asking him to join their team.

According to the complaint, Doyle made the call last night at around 9pm after talking to Guantanamo chairman Ryan Platten about the availability of Kruger for the rest of the season. Platten allegedly told Doyle that Kruger was currently injured, and the Mighty Orange would be aiming to play him in the last couple of games of the season.

Kruger allegedly informed Platten and Guantanamo Captain Andy Smyth of the call earlier today. According to Kruger, Doyle offered to buy out Kruger's registration fee for the remainder of the season. No offer was tabled to his contracted club.

Smyth stated today that he was 'disgusted' by the actions of Hagan's Heroes in tapping up his legendary goalkeeper.

If the complaint is accepted by the BSA, Hagan's Heroes could suffer a fate similar to that of Chelsea FC, who, earlier this year, were banned from signing any new players until 2011.

This scandal is sure to give some fire to the next clash between the two B-Liga heavyweights, who are dude to go head-to-head in two weeks time.

IDENTICAL TWINS OR CAN YOU SPOT THE DIFFERENCES?

It would be easy to list the similarities, but obviously the differences are tougher to deduce. Of course there is the bleeding obvious - one of them is a marketing phenom known worldwide for his exploits on and off the field. The other plays for LA Galaxy. But there are others -

1. Becks has never lost to Racing Guantanamo.
2. Doyle has played football with Jimmy Asimacopoulos.
3. Becks hasn't spent 20 years in Victoria.

Guess the other 5 differences and go into the draw to win a labrador pup (black or white) ....

B-Liga Fifth Round Summary

Controversy, fantastic goals and a spectacular implosion of a side; what else could it be but the next round of Broome's premiere footballing league, the B-Liga.

Hagan's Heroes unveiled their latest signing before the match in the form of AFL player Mick Albert. Albert had been on the radar of the Greens for a long time, and finally signed on for this crunch match against Broome City. Some sections of the media had criticised the Heroes over their tactics and general lack of team play, and they were looking to make amends for their worst ever start to a B-Liga season. Broome City on the other hand, had just come off a resounding win against Racing Guantanamo, and were keen to add to their points tally to keep in touch with the league leaders. However, it was surprise packet Nathan Green who caused all sorts of trouble on the right and netting the first goal of the game. It was cancelled out by a scintillating strike from Sasho Jovanovski before Hagan's asserted themselves to take control of the game. Mick Albert looked the good at the back and prevented the Blues from threatening the goal.

Final Score: Broome City 1 - 3 Hagan's Heroes

Racing Guantanamo had every right to feel aggrieved after watching a close match against Broome City last week balloon out of control. The Mighty Orange went into the match without marquee man Tony Delaney and the speedy Jack Reagan, two losses which tested Guantanamo's strength in depth. NDFC were able to field a full-strength team and were looking forward to testing themselves against a Guantanamo team which was historically their bogey side. The match began well for Guantanamo, with several surging runs on goal by Johnny Falconer and Luke Turner, but the NDFC defence coped well, with Selwyn Taylor and Tank U-Ten looking very solid at the back. As the match wore on, Guantanamo's fitness levels were called into question as huge gaps appeared in the midfield. Constant pressure from an in-form Tom Offer as well as Jesse Anear added to the weary woes of the Guantanamo defence as a second half capitulation saw NDFC score three more goals to put the match beyond doubt.

Final Score: NDFC 7 - 3 Racing Guantanamo AFC

Based on the form book, Racing Guantanamo may as well pack it in now and not even bother showing up for their game against the Pirates next week. However, stranger things have happened, and Guantanamo can look forward to welcoming back Jack Reagan to the fold. Reagan's speed and fitness have been missed, and he will plug a huge gap for them. However, the Pirates have shown themselves to be superior in all aspects this season, and I can't go past them for a very convincing win.

Hagan's Heroes are looking to banish the under-achievers tag once and for all, and NDFC could be the team to do it against. But NDFC are proving to be no pushovers, and their surprise win against Racing Guantanamo has set them up to possibly get a win over the Heroes. However, both teams look strong and I have to say that I can't really seperate them. I think this will be a draw, or possibly a very slight Hagan's victory.

Until next week.

Praise for Armstrong from Retiring Coach

Courtesy of footballwa.net and Brett Klucznik.
"While based in Bunbury in 1983, a 15-year old Alan Armstrong impressed me, he went on to represent the State and won many titles with Stirling Macedonia." - Frank Longstaff, former Canning City coach

1.10.2009

LONGSTAFF SIGNS OFF

One of the state's most knowledgeable and experienced coaches, Frank Longstaff, made a graceful exit from football by guiding Canning City for the final time last weekend. Longstaff coached at every level and enjoyed many successes during a remarkable 27-year career on the local stage, which has been brought to a close by work commitments. "The game on Saturday against Cockburn was my final one as coach of Canning," said Longstaff, who soon commences a fly in, fly out job in Karratha. "I've coached in West Australia since I arrived in 1982 and enjoyed every minute of it, the good times and the bad."

Ending his six-year tenure as coach of Canning was a tough decision for Longstaff, who has every faith in the club returning to the top flight. "Football is a passion for me so I will always be around the game when time permits," he said. "Leaving Canning is a big wrench, it has been a part of my life for six years but I'm certain the club will bounce back bigger and stronger for the experience. In Malcolm and Billy Watson they have two extremely passionate Canning men and the wheels are already in motion for the necessary changes to get the club back where they belong."

2009 didn't go anywhere near to plan for Longstaff. The season was only a couple of weeks old when the Canning coach was sent off for an on-field incident at Swan United which, after investigation by Football West, resulted it the respected coach being slapped with a two-year suspension. "I was devastated to receive the lengthy ban - which is still a mystery to me - but I had to take it on the chin," he said. "It had a massive impact on myself, the club and the players. I gave it my all, albeit under trying circumstances, but having no contact with the players on match days took away my strength of man management."

And although Canning bounced back to sit in the top five after eleven games, the teams' failure to win in the second half of the winter resulted in a dramatic slide into the relegation mire. "We started the season with a large squad but by halfway the season through injury and players returning to the UK left us threadbare. The players that remained gave there all for the cause but in the end just came up short," said Longstaff. "In hindsight, I would only sign overseas players who had come to Australia to play football, as when it came to the crunch we were extremely stretched for the last few weeks of the season."

Longstaff spent two years on the books of each Newcastle United and Burnley before "drifting around the non-League in my native North East mostly with limited success." He headed down under in the early 1980's and cut his coaching teeth through spells with Bunbury Dynamos, Bunbury City and Windsor Athletic. Two successful years at Ferndale United reaped the 1990 First Division championship, and preceded spells in charge of Kelmscott Roos, North Perth Croatia and the State Women's team. Longstaff captured another First Division title in 1997 with Southside United before an extended period as coach of the State junior teams and a year with Kwinana United. In 2004 he was appointed coach of Canning in 2004 and last year steered the club to the First Division championship.

There have been a myriad of highs in Longstaff's career, amongst them the trio of league titles and five years as a State junior team coach. "Winning the league with Ferndale, Southside and Canning are obvious highlights, as was taking the State Under-15 team to the semi-finals of the National titles in 2001," said Longstaff, who twelve months ago was recognised as the First Division Coach of the Year. "But what means most to me are the many, many people I can call true friends as a result of football. I'm extremely proud of staying in the game for the length of time I have and, hopefully, I've influenced a few football careers over the years."

A few players sprang instantly to mind when Longstaff was asked who are the players that have really stood out over the years. "While based in Bunbury in 1983, a 15-year old Alan Armstrong impressed me, he went on to represent the State and won many titles with Stirling Macedonia. Alan Hind was the strongest, toughest defender I have seen who could also play a bit," said Longstaff. "From my State days, Tony Naglieri and Jon Higgins are among the most skilful players I have worked with, both could play at A-League level, and Sean Kilkelly and Daryl Platten are both great players and very good leaders."

Longstaff then singled out three of this seasons' Canning squad for special praise. "Paul Oliver has everything, his fitness lets him down but there is no better or more skilful player in WA," said Longstaff, who pieced together his squad over a number of years. "Paul van Dongen proved his worth this season in the Premier League, he makes some fantastic runs from midfield and is still improving so I expect a lot from him over the next few years. And Devon Spence is as good a goalkeeping prospect as I have seen - either here or in the UK."

B-Liga Fouth Round Summary

The fourth round of the B-Liga was held after a two week lay-off, to allow any international players to join up with their national squads for the World Cup qualifiers. Despite not having anyone arrested on DUI charges, the media was hungry for any news from Broome's premier footballing league, and they descended in droves on Father McMahon field for two matches which would surely be as close as they were competitive.

In the match of the round, champions NDFC took on former champions Pearl Coast Pirates, with the Pirates looking to blow out their lead at the top to a whopping 8 points. They weren't without problems though, with talismanic midfielder Phil Sheridan away on international duties, and captain Richard Brunger forced to watch the match on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury in the last round. With a weakened Pirates' team, NDFC looked to go on the attack and show just why they were the champions. Alan Armstrong, who was praised by retiring coach Frank Longstaff last week, was the key to the NDFC midfield which held up resolutely, to limit the Pirates to just one goal in the first half. That was equalled by the champs to make it 1-1 at half time. However, the second half saw the Pirates pushing forward harder than they had before, and they were rewarded with two more goals to seal the match. The question must now be asked, how will the Pirates cope without key man Gareth Jones, who has inked a deal to return to Sydney in the next few weeks?

Final Score: NDFC 1 - 3 Pearl Coast Pirates

Racing Guantanamo had been riding a wave of euphoria after their third round destruction of Hagan's Heroes two weeks ago. They faced a stiff test of their new-found match winning ability in Broome City. City, who have had their fair share of critics in the media for their discipline issues, took the field without captain Tim Mildenhall who was away on international duties. Both teams started off well - with opportunities at both ends, but it was City who took the lead through an uncharacteristic mistake by Guantanamo captain Andy Smyth, who passed the ball to Jamie Lane who thundered the ball past Orange goalkeeper Andy Chapman. The score stayed at that for rest of the first half and much of the second, as the Mighty Orange tried to find a way through the stubborn Broome City defence. However, a second goal for the Blues was followed by 4 more in quick succession as Guantanamo finished the match with a whimper and City locked themselves into second spot on the ladder.

Final Score: Broome City 6 - 0 Racing Guantanamo

Racing Guantanamo AFC vs. NDFC
Odds: Racing Guantanamo win $2.30, Draw $2.10, NDFC $2.40

With Pearl Coast Pirates out of the equation this weekend, the results will be a lot harder to call. In match one of the round, a demoralised Hagan's Heroes host a rejuvenated Broome City. City, who were a little flattered by the scoreline against Racing Guantanamo, will be looking to consolidate their results, which have seen the Blues awarded the 'most inconsistent' tag, with one win, one draw and one loss so far. The Heroes on the other hand have seen their worst start to a B-Liga season ever, with the newly-made-green team winning only one game so far. I am going to have to sit on the fence on this one, as I can't see either team in excellent form, and I reckon they'll both cancel each other out. Draw - but exciting to watch.

With a deflated Racing Guantanamo looking to fire up again to recapture the form shown before the break, look for the Mighty Oranges to really try and stamp their authority on this game from the start. However, with NDFC welcoming back Alan Armstrong and JJ Murray, this could be a tall order for Guantanamo, who will be without marquee man Tony Delaney (thigh). I would expect another hard fought match here, and again it's too close to really call with any confidence. But I'm going to have to go ahead and say Racing Guantanamo will pip it by a slender margin. Guantanamo to win, but not convincingly.

Until next week.

B-Liga Third Round Summary

The third round of the B-Liga kicked off under lights and intense media scrutiny last night, as the giants of Broome football clashed on the pristine grass of Father McMahon Field.
Billed as the "poor cousin" of the matches of this round, Racing Guantanamo vs. Hagan's Heroes turned into a classic win for the orange underdogs who totally outclassed and outwitted their much more illustrious opponents. B-Liga history buffs will know that prior to this, Guantanamo had never managed to take even so much as a point off the Heroes. A flamboyant attack of key passes and excellent runs, built on strong defensive and midfield foundations were the keys to Guantanamo's success, but it must also call into question the tactics of the Heroes' coaching staff who again persisted with one lone striker. This time however, it was Mike Doyle who was battling alone up front, and it wasn't until late in the game when he was supported by Brett Claudius and Karen Salkilld that he looked even remotely threatening. Guantanamo however, didn't let up, and it was of great joy to the Orange fans that Martin Kessler stood up to have his best performance of the season so far - stamping his authority on the game. Irishman Joe Tighe also worked hard in defence to keep Hagan's Heroes to just one goal, while young gun Luke Turner netted a hat-trick to put the score beyond doubt.

Final Score: Racing Guantanamo AFC 6 - 1 Hagan's Heroes

The match of the round saw title challengers Broome City and Pearl Coast Pirates collide in a match that was expected to have its share of fireworks. It didn't disappoint either, with plenty of crunching tackles and exuberant goal celebrations delighting the spectators on the sidelines. Phil Sheridan was again the star performer on the night, but the talking point has to be the return of Ken Goatley to the B-Liga. The former Racing Guantanamo man has come in at the request of Pirates' captain Richard Brunger, upsetting many Mighty Orange fans. Goatley took on a defensive role alongside South African Ronny Venter, and the two formed a solid partnership to keep City down to just two goals. Steve Shaw again impressed for the Blues, but the big news for City is the loss of legend Bill Shaw, who was stretchered off during the match. No reports as yet as to the type of injury, but Shaw did spend time in hospital, and the news out of the City camp is that he will be out for the season.

Final Score: Broome City 2 - 6 Pearl Coast Pirates

NDFC vs. Pearl Coast Pirates
Odds: NDFC $2.20, Draw $2.30, Pearl Coast Pirates $1.90

Well, there's a 2 week break followed by another big week of Broome football - the undoubted match of the round has to be champions NDFC taking on pretenders to the throne Pearl Coast Pirates. NDFC haven't impressed many with their recruiting so far, but they have impressed with their results. A narrow loss to Hagan's Heroes in Round 1 followed by a draw with highly fancied Broome City has left the critics speechless. This is an interesting one, with NDFC sure to try and get their title defence on track, but it is hard to go against Pearl Coast Pirates, who have really got a strong core of experience players. NDFC will be tougher than people expect, but I can't look past the Pirates, who I reckon can go through the season undefeated.

Last week, I predicted that Racing Guantanamo would be rolled over by Hagan's Heroes. Boy was I wrong. The Mighty Orange really kicked it up a gear, and if they can play against Broome City the way they did against Hagan's, this could be a second win on the trot for them. City's discipline issues have been heavily documented over the last few weeks, and they will need to keep their heads screwed on if they are to take on this highly confident Guantanamo side. My prediction is a hard fought draw, which will probably see more than its fair share of talking points come the end of the match.

See you in two weeks time.

B-Liga Second Round Summary

With the crowds in attendance, the second round of the B-Liga kicked off at Father McMahon Field last night, thrilling spectators with some cracking football.

The match of the round was undoubtably 2007 champions Pearl Coast Pirates, against a Hagan's Heroes outfit who have picked up the runners up medal two years in a row. With both teams firing on all cylinders so far, there was much speculation that the winner of this one could go all the way and pick up the league title. The Pirates went into the match as slight favourites, and showed their class throughout the first part of the game, passing the ball around well and using some clever touches and flick-ons to torment the Heroes' defence. The normally composed Heroes began to look frustrated, as their baffling tactic of only playing with one man up front backfired, with Andy Graffen usually battling away alone against three Pearl Coast players. Gareth Jones looked particularly good for the Pirates, scoring a hat-trick of excellent goals to further his team's cause, while Matt Carroll looked dangerous for the Heroes going forward.

Final Score: Pearl Coast Pirates 8 - 2 Hagan's Heroes

In the other game, Broome City fired up for their first match of the season, as they took on last year's champions NDFC. With the Sky Blues desperately trying to gel their new squad together, NDFC went on the attack, playing some great football to cause havoc in the City defence. However, the Blues hit back via Stephen Shaw, who netted a brace to close the scores. Some controversial penalties, and some typically firey personalities on the pitch made for an interesting close, with Musekiwa John impressing for City as they held on for the draw.

Final Score: NDFC 3 - 3 Broome City

Pearl Coast Pirates vs. Broome City
Odds: Pearl Coast Pirates win $2.00, Draw $3.00, Broome City win $3.50

There are some mouthwatering matchups taking place next week at Father Mac, with Hagan's Heroes meeting Racing Guantanamo AFC, and Pearl Coast Pirates taking on Broome City.

Statistics will show that Racing Guantanamo have never beaten Hagan's Heroes. Will this fact influence the game on Wednesday night? I'd have to say yes. Despite the leaps and bounds Guantanamo have taken this season, recruiting a healthy balance of youth and experience, I just can't see them matching the free-flowing style of Hagan's Heroes. However, after seeing some very defensive football being played by the Heroes in the last round where they left Andy Graffen up front on his own, I think Guantanamo may have a chance if they can take him and Mike Doyle out of the equation. I think though that this is a definate win for the Heroes.

I think we should expect fireworks from the second match when the Pirates take on Broome City. Both teams have the potential to be very intense and fire up, and both captains will have to be on their toes to reign in any unwanted aggression. Pearl Coast have been playing really well so far, and not only do they knock the ball around well, but their support for each other is excellent. Players will move in behind each other and make runs to help out, and it shows in the results. Broome City however have the potential to negate this style of play...if they can keep their heads focussed on the game and not the referee. I can see this as a major flaw in this Broome City team, which has a lot of talent, but can't hold their tempers. This match will be entertaining, niggly and competitive, but Pearl Coast will come out on top.

Until next week.

B-Liga First Round Summary

The first round of the B-Liga took place under lights at Father McMahon Field on Wednesday night under enormous media and public scrutiny, after a record season break of nearly 4 months.

The Broome Soccer Association scheduled this blockbuster as the first match to draw the crowds back, with last season's champions facing off against last season's runners up. The match didn't disappoint either, with both sides looking competitive. Mike Doyle was productive in the Heroes' engine room, contributing 4 goals, including a scintillating diving header. Jesse Anear was on song for a new-look NDFC side, which was without talisman Jimmy Asimacopolous, who, rumours has it, has retired.

Final Score: Hagan's Heroes 6 - 3 NDFC

Old foes Pearl Coast Pirates and Racing Guantanamo faced off on the other pitch - this match historically had been filled with bad blood and intense rivalry. However, the new-look Pirates have been marshalled well by captain Richard Brunger, and they looked very good on the attack. The Pirates defence was also anchored by the exceptionally solid Ronny Venter, and Guantanamo were frustrated time and time again by the wily South African. Phil Sheridan also put on a footballing lesson, with the Northern Irishman creating havoc in the Guantanamo defence. Guantanamo were by no means out of the match however, and despite the lopsided final scoreline, the Mighty Orange were competitive, launching swift counter attacks via the ever-improving Jon Falconer and new signing Tony Delaney. Guantanamo's injury woes however, have been well-publicised, and it may be a few weeks before we see the best of them.

Final Score: Pearl Coast Pirates 11 - 4 Racing Guantanamo AFC

Broome City vs. NDFC
Odds: Broome City win $1.80, Draw $2.50, NDFC win $5.00

Hagan's Heroes vs. Pearl Coast Pirates
Odds: Hagan's Heroes win $1.50, Draw $1.60, Pearl Coast Pirates win $1.45

There should be a couple of great games on hand this week, with Broome City playing their first match of the season. NDFC were competitive last week, but I can't see them being a match for the tough, no nonsense Broome City squad. The other match however, should be a barnstormer.

I reckon Pearl Coast Pirates are odds-on favourites to re-take the title this season. The inaugural B-Liga champs had a barren year last season, but I think the squad they have assembled this year is second-to-none, and they will be tough to beat. Hagan's Heroes however, are no pushovers. They have some talented players in there, and they will give the Pirates a run for their money. Whatever the score, and whoever wins, I think this could have the potential to be the match of the season.

Until next week.

BROOME WOMEN RETAIN NORTH WEST W LEAGUE SHIELD

BSA' s women's team beat Newman 6-0 in Broome's inaugural Friday night floodlight football feista.
Some say it was the dodgy pre game music, perhaps it was the new shirts, the television cameras, the support of Jimmy Asimacopolouseseses sister, who knows but Broome's footballing fillies did the town and association proud to retain the North West W League Shield and continue their unbeaten run.
A crushing first half performance from the home side set up the victory, however Newman should be commended for their fighting spirit, after being down 5-0 at half time and not having any shirt and tied coaches or technical directors chewing gum on the sideline to assist them.
A stunning two minute spell of scintillating soccer from BSA secretary and event organiser Monique Kelly just about put the icing on the cake, but BSA only had sausages. So it was snags and bread all round at the presentations - and a couple of cool mugs.
It's really quite pure and simple. Broome's women were super special on the night and they are already looking for their next challenge. So who's next? (stay tuned for more pics)

Women’s soccer to get kick started with representative game

Competitive soccer returns to Broome on September 4 when the Broome Soccer Association’s women’s team look to defend its title against Newman. The Broome women have been training hard in preparation for the inter-town game, the first to be played under lights at Father McMahon Sports Field.

The side played an inaugural representative game against Newman last year. Broome won that game 7-2 despite never having played together before or having their own league to practice in. One year on and the women’s game is beginning to gain momentum with the establishment of a stand alone women’s futsal (indoor soccer) competition and specialised training sessions for the Broome squad.

The team have been training hard at Male Oval and BSA secretary Monique Kelly said the team were really looking forward to another game against Newman. “Last year I think we surprised Newman with the way we played. There are a lot of good players up here and this year we again have a good mix of experience and youth, but we are expecting a tougher game against them this time, now they know what to expect from us.”

The popularity has ensured the game will now go outdoors with several women keen to coordinate a social kick at Father McMahon field on Wednesdays to coincide with the BSA’s senior competition, the B Liga.

Ms Kelly said growing the women’s game in Broome was an important part of developing the sport in the region. “We’re keen to create more opportunities for women to participate. Soccer is probably the fastest growing female sport and with the Perth Glory women’s team now up and running and Indigenous pathways for the younger girls. It’s the perfect time to give women in Broome the opportunity to try the sport, have fun and get fit.”

She said it was pleasing to see so many young girls participating in the junior small sided games program. “Hopefully some of these girls will come down and watch us play and we can give them something to aim for in years to come.”

Broome’s development has echoed all the way to Perth where a women’s team from the State Premier league is interested in travelling to Broome to play a game at the end of their season. The Newman game will kick off at 6.30pm all spectators welcome.

Newman v Broome Women' s Football

Well the time has come for the ladies to show the blokes how it is done when Newman travel up to Broome to compete for the North West W-League title. The game is scheduled for tomorrow night at the new fields behind the Broome Rec and Aquatic Centre. The Broome girls have been training hard, while the Newman ladies have just finished their fast and furious season.

Word has travelled far and wide for this much anticipated event and even made an impact on our southern dwelling football family http://www.footballwest.com.au/articles/news/broome-gives-womens-soccer-a-kickstart/

Word from the Broome team is that they are pumped! while Newman hope that the Friday night schedule will eliminate last years unfortunate slump in performance.

This is Friday night Football at its best - and an event not to missed. So head down to join in the festivities and support the ladies to promote this great game!

B-Liga Pre-Season

Well - we are now two weeks into the B-Liga pre-season, and already some clubs have signalled their intent to challenge NDFC for their championship. The standard of the competition has increased this year, as have the hype and crowds (last night, Male Oval was bursting to near-capacity with over 8 people cheering on their teams.

Broome City have undergone a management restructure this season with last season's captain Jon Gallichan sharing the load with new co-captain Tim Mildenhall. Both men have arguably the most explosive team in the league, with firebrand Bill Shaw signing up for another season. Also nabbing Julia Marley from Pearl Coast Pirates, the Blues have shown they are not afraid to raid rival clubs to fuel their ambitions. City are also the only team to have someone called "Tiger" on their team...Rawr!

SQUAD: Jon Gallichan (c), Tim Mildenhall (c), Mark Cowell, Jamie Lane, Jeremy Witts, Eanna McGovern, Colm O’Brien, Julia Marley, Cindy Watterson, Stephen Shaw, Bill Shaw, Musekiwa John, Andrew (Tiger)

Hagan's Heroes look to be the team to beat. New captain Chris Stainton has inherited a steady team peppered with a few class recruits should see the Heroes mounting a challenge again this season. The perpetual runners-up (they have finished twice in both seasons so far) have maintained the bulk of their squad, and with the plucky Mike Doyle looking especially fired up so far, they should have what it takes to control the midfield and put together some excellent passages of play. How they will go at the back remains a mystery, as longtime Hero defender Gary Thayer has retired and has not been replaced.

SQUAD: Chris Stainton (c), Karen Salkilld, Brett Salkilld, Monique Kelly, Marc Brooker, Mike Dawson, Ryan Winfield, Mike Doyle, Matt Cullen, Mike Dawson, Andy Graffen

Pearl Coast Pirates are another team who have a new look squad this year. New captain Richard Brunger has engaged in an aggressive recruitment campaign which has netted some players of individual brilliance. Northern Irishman Phil Sheridan embodies this talented era, but it remains to be seen whether or not Brunger and vice-captain Ronny Venter can gel the squad together into a title chellenger. The Pirates have also opted to include youth players in their squad, with Emmanuel Navarette and Joe Italiano looking particularly impressive.

SQUAD: Richard Brunger (c), Ronald Venter (vc), Jared Venter, Jay Mashman, Paul Roach, Gareth Jones, Phil Sheridan, Paul Hedlan, Matt Sheridan, Emmanuel Navarrete, Joe Italiano, Sasho Jovanosky

Racing Guantanamo AFC have had a relativley low-key off season, with the ever improving Mighty Oranges maintaining the majority of their squad, while adding some class recruits such as Michael Strappa and Drasko Jankovic. Guantanamo have also shown their ambition by stealing Gareth Vickery from under the noses of both Broome City and Pearl Coast Pirates. Injury concerns have not abated however with long term injuries to Tim Gray and legendary goalkeeper Francois Kruger particularly worrying. However, captain Andy Smyth has Guantanamo playing free-flowing football this year, and with the ironclad midfield of Joe Tighe and Martin Kessler, the Mighty Orange fans are looking forward to a great season ahead.

SQUAD: Andy Smyth (c), Chris Hingston, Danny Pinchas, Andy Chapman, Gareth Vickery, Drasko Jankovic, Michael Strappa, Terry Ragoonanan, Martin Kessler, Joe Tighe, Kath Dabrowska, Ryan Platten, Francois Kruger, Joel Hamling, Kane Fitzpatrick, Luke Turner, Jon Falconer

NDFC are last year's champions, and they already realise the tough task they have to hold onto their crown this season. The champs have gone for a youth policy this season with 6 of their squad under the age of 18. New captain Sam Reid has the biggest name in Broome Soccer Jimmy Asimacopolous at his displosal and he has the ability to get NDFC hitting their straps early. Asimacoplolous will be ably supported by longtime Blue-and-Whites JJ Murray and Steve Boniwell. If NDFC can replicate their form from last season, they will be hard to beat, but with such a large turnover in players, and the increased quality of their opposition, they will have a tough time on their hands to retain their title.

SQUAD: Sam Reid (c), Steve Boniwell, Jimmy Asimacopoulos, Selwyn Taylor, Troy Hunter, Thank U-Ten, Peter Tribe, Thomas Offer, Nicholas Anear, Jeremy Anear, Tom Hartland

This should be a great season. What are your thoughts? Leave your comments.
