Opportunity to learn how to coach juniors

The Broome Soccer Association is offering a free coaching clinic to those wishing to learn more about how to conduct the under 12 small sided games program.
Broome was one of the first to implement the new coaching philosophy that is now being brought in across Australia.
Bring your boots or runners and be prepared as you will be the children! No experience necessary just bring a sense of humor and be prepared to enjoy yourself.
Those interested should contact Mike Doyle on 0488 063 639 or contact info@broomesoccer.com to ensure your place.
The session will be held on Monday August 10 from 5pm - 7pm at Haynes Oval.

Are you interested in assisting with our junior program?

The BSA under 12 Junior program will again be run this year. It will be the third year for the juniors and there is a very real demand to expand this program into the youth age groups.
At this stage the BSA is run by a small band of merry volunteers, most of whom don't even have kids of their own!
As we currently stand the BSA provides indoor, outdoor, beach, women's and junior competitions and is now beginning to get enquiries as to representative competition. In order for the game to continue to develop and for the BSA to meet demand it is important for others to lend a hand, particularly parents who are keen to enrol their children.
If anyone is interested in assisting in any way. Please talk to the committee during registration on August 1st from 10am - 12 noon at Broome Senior High School or call Mike Doyle on 0488 063 639 or email inf0@broomesoccer.com

Women's Training Suffers Temporary Set-Back

The training of the Broome Soccer Association's women's squad for the upcoming match against Newman has suffered a temporary set-back, with Kimberley Cup winning manager Ryan Platten having to sit out a training session because of an urgent meeting (possibly with the FFA for a spot with the Australian squad that will go to the World Cup next year).

With Platten out for the week, Technical Director Mike Doyle will step in and don the coach's tracksuit to continue the session.

Time will tell if this switch will have a negative effect on the ladies who are trying desperately to gel as a squad. Doyle is unproven as a manager, and it remains to be seen if he will be the new Paul Ince, ploughing his team into the relegation quagmire, or the new Roy Keane, leading his team to low mid-table results before taking his ball and going home.

One light at the end of the tunnel will be the return of championship winning Platten to the team next week to steady the ship after Doyle's rocky one week reign.

Poaching of HH players??

The biggest name in BSA out to persuade Hagans Heros' finest to switch teams. In the ongoing battle between good, evil , save the dinosaur and losing the el presidentes' tent (who would of thought the president was up to "camping"?) it looks like he may be on a winner - stay tuned for further updates

Rift grows between BSA el presidente and biggest name in BSA

A simple humanitarian gesture of good will has quickly esculated into an international incident that could threaten the very heart of the BSA.
Jimmy Asimacopoulos, aka the biggest name in the broome soccer asssociation has lost one of the most prized possessions of el presidente and refuses to accept responsibility for his actions.
Recently entrusted with the 'can't even buy in australia it is that good' possession, for a particular camping trip. Claims the item simply disappeared from the back of the ute in transit appear dodgy at best. It is highly likely the act was a deliberate attempt to destabilise EP ahead of hagan's heroes attempt to be the first team in history to finish second in the b liga three times in a row.
The possession, aka a yellow tent of extreme sentimental value, (it still contained el presidente hair in the zip from when he got his head stuck in it when first arriving in Broome) is still missing presumed dead. Both Greek and Irish emabassies are now embroiled in the controversy.
Asimacopoulos has clashed with Hagan's Heroes members on more than one occassion recently, on top of the ongoing feud with the side's owner there has also been outlandish remarks aimed at several of the female stars and a no show at Australia's World Cup winning qualification extravaganza hosted by HH players amongst the indiscretions. How this will effect NDFC's title defence remains to be seen. Extra security will be arranged for the first HHvs NDFC clash.

Coach Ryan Platten and Technical Assistant Mike Doyle provided a number of drills and activities and kept the ladies on their toes. Feedback from a number of ladies was that it was a great session and heaps of fun - so thanks guys! All women are incouraged to come down to Male Oval for a kick to learn some skills and its great for fitness. It looks very promising for the Newman showdown in September

Broome Soccer Association - Champions of Road Safety

The Broome Soccer Association has received funding which will help prevent fatigue related fatalities and serious injury on our roads.

The $14,000 grant from the Community Road Safety Grants Program will assist the association purchase a custom built trailer which will be used to operate Driver Reviver sites throughout the Shire of Broome.

The Association will also promote the “don’t drive tired” message to the Kimberley community.

Broome RoadWise Committee chairman, John McCourt, said fatigue was the silent killer on Western Australian roads and could be responsible for up to 30 per cent of all road deaths.

“We also recognise that some road users do take risks and make mistakes when driving long distances around the Kimberley,” Mr McCourt said.

“People don’t always obey the rules, but together with enforcement, we will continue to educate road users and increase awareness of the driver fatigue issue.” he said.

Driver Reviver is a community program operated by volunteers from a wide range of service organisations and community groups, whose members give up their own time to help reduce the road toll.

Driver Reviver sites are an ideal place to take a break on a long journey. They offer a free cup of Bushells tea, coffee, an Arnott’s biscuit, or simply a place to stop and chat with the friendly volunteers before continuing safely on your journey.

Broome Soccer Association President, Mike Doyle, said association clubs had already nominated volunteers to operate sites on a regular basis.

He said the Driver Reviver volunteers would target all road users in their campaign to reduce the road toll.

“Locals going away for a weekend, families on holidays, singles, grey nomads, or backpackers are all welcome to stop, have a cuppa and a chat,” he said.

What can you do

If you are driving, you should get off the road if you:

  • are yawning;
  • are blinking more than usual;
  • are having trouble keeping your head up;
  • notice your eyes closing for a moment or going out of focus; or
  • forget driving the last few kilometres.

Early danger signs of fatigue include:

  • wandering thoughts;
  • missing a gear, road sign or exit;
  • slowing unintentionally; and
  • braking too late.

After driving for long periods, you should stop for a break or coffee, swap drivers where possible or stop to have a short sleep. Remember to get plenty of rest the night before a long trip.

You should not be driving if you feel tired.

Committee Launches "Call the Ref, Ref" Campaign

The Broome Soccer Association is very committed to the ongoing education of the footballing public. Incensed by years of Australians calling the referee "umpire", the committee has decided to take a stand against this blatant lack of respect for the beautiful game.

Headed by President Mike Doyle, the campaign will be fining members of the Association who continue to refer to the referee as "umpire". So far, several committee members have been responsible for this footballing faux pas and have been fined accordingly.

I have it on good authority that BSA Secretary Monique Ellis and Treasurer Tim Gray are both high on the fine stakes, while President Doyle is on a witch hunt to slander my name as much as he can.

Latest fines are:

Ellis: $3585
Gray: $25
Platten: $5 (although this has been brought up in the Court of Appeals)

BSHS Take Kimberley Cup Title

Broome Senior High School A Team have come out on top in the 2009 Kimberley Cup Indoor Soccer Tournament.

Beating the likes of Halls Creek, One Arm Point, St Mary's College and Derby to reach the finals, the squad was clearly a cut above the rest, using fluid passing football and constant pressure on the ball.

The A team faced the B team in the finals, coming out on top 10-3. In fact, the A team conceded only 6 goals during the entire tournament, bagging over 60.

Well done to the boys, and coaches Ryan Platten and Francois Kruger who finally managed to win the championship after three years of getting pipped at the post in 2 consecutive finals.

A Team Squad: Jordan WILLIAMS (c), Taylor WRIGLEY (vc), Luke TURNER, Jackson CORDINGLEY, Emmanuel NAVARETTE, Selwyn TAYLOR, Troy HUNTER (gk)
