Juniors Program Starts With a Bang

There wasn't a vuvuzela in sight, nor a complaint about how the ball flew at altitude, but clearly the 2010 FIFA World Cup has had an effect on the psyche of the youth of Broome.

On Wednesday 21st July, a record 157 children aged 5-12, registered for the Broome Soccer Association's Small Sided Games program.

This is the fourth year that the program has been run by the Association, and interest is clearly on the rise.

BSA president Mike Doyle said that the program has only grown in popularity since its inception.

"It is an unbelievable turnout," he said. "Clearly we have had a boost from the interest in the World Cup, but it also shows that the game is growing here in the Kimberley."

In fact, this surge in numbers has left the Association clamouring for help from anyone interested in lending a hand.

"If you have any knowledge of soccer, or just want to help grow the game, we'd love to have you," Doyle said.

If anyone would like to lend a hand, contact Mike Doyle on 0488 063 639, or get down to Father McMahon Field on Wednesday at 4pm.
